New Monday Night Group for Beginners
The Carson City group of Dharma Zephyr Insight Meditation Community is offering a new sitting meditation period starting Monday, October 3, 2011. It will take place every Monday from 5:30 to 6:30, just before the longstanding Monday night sit, which takes place from 7:00 to 8:30 pm.
Candice Chartraw, Jeff Froschauer, and Anne Macquarie will facilitate the group.Though Jeff, Anne and Candice have years of study and meditation practice between them, they are not calling themselves leaders. "It will be a peer-led group, " Anne says. "We're doing this because we want to offer a shorter sitting period specifically for beginners, but also for those who just don't want to sit very long - or who'd like to get home before 9 pm."
After introductions, the group will sit in meditation for around 25 minutes, then read and discuss Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness: Walking the Buddha's Path, a clear, engaging introduction to the Buddha's Noble Eightfold Path by the beloved Sri Lankan teacher Bhante Gunaratana.
Jeff, Candice and Anne will offer guided meditation instructions for newcomers.
The new sitting period will be held in the youth group building of the First United Methodist Church in Carson City, at 213 N. Minnesota (SE Corner of Minnesota and Proctor). No registration is necessary, and there is no charge, though traditionally we give a small "dana" donation to cover costs. For information, please contact Anne at anne@dharmazephyr.org
